USA Championship of chess: Akobian and Abrahamyan are runners-up (PHOTO)

American-Armenian chess players GM Varuzhan Akobian and WGM Tatev Abrahamyan won silver medals in Tuesday’s playoffs at the USA Championship, which wrapped up in Saint Louis.

After defeating GM Aleksandr Lenderman in the “armageddon” phase, Akobian battled GM Gata Kamsky for the gold medal. But the Armenian chess master was defeated and Kamsky was declared the US Champion for the third year in a row.

In the women’s competition, Abrahamyan lost to GM Irina Krush in the tiebreak and became the runner-up. Krush, on the other hand, defended her title.
