USA Championship of chess: Akobian and Abrahamyan to fight for gold medals

GM Varuzhan Akobian and WGM Tatev Abrahamyan will fight for the title of USA champions in Tuesday’s playoffs at the USA Championship of chess being held in Saint Louis.

In the Men’s Championship, Akobian has tallied 7 points out of 11 and shares first to third places together with GMs Gata Kamsky and Aleksandr Lenderman.

First, an “armageddon” will be held Tuesday between Akobian and Lenderman, and the winner will battle Kamsky for the gold medal.

The situation is the same in the Women’s Championship. Abrahamyan has amassed 6.5 points out of 9 and shares first to third places together with GM Irina Krush and IM Anna Zatonskih.

First, Abrahamyan will play an “armageddon” with Zatonskih, and the winner will face Krush for the champion’s title.
