Aronian’s games are art – Russian GM

Chess Grandmaster (GM) Alexander Grischuk commented on the Candidates Tournament 2014, which is held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, Sport Weekend reported.

Grischuk also reflected on the performance by GM Levon Aronian, who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the previous World Team Chess champions, Armenia, and who is second in the World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings.

“Aronian’s game leaves a good impression. After losing to [former World Chess Champion, GM Viswanathan] Anand [India] in the first round, he managed to return the loss.

“His games are art. His [chess] pieces seem to come alive and become a participant in the events.

“But I have to note that Levon was lucky in the matches against [GM Peter] Svidler [Russia] and [GM Shakhriyar] Mamedyarov [Azerbaijan],” Grischuk said, in particular.

After the seventh round in the tournament, Aronian and Anand lead the current standings with 4.5 points, apiece.

The two GMs will face one another again in Saturday’s Round 8.

The GM who wins this tournament will become the official World Chess Champion candidate, and compete against reining World Chess Champion, GM Magnus Carlsen (Norway), who tops the FIDE rankings, for the title of World Chess Champion.
