Beijing: Armenia’s Aronian suffers two consecutive defeats

Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian played a draw with GM Leinier Domínguez Pérez (Cuba) in the 25th match of the blitz chess tournament being held within the framework of the World Mind Games in Chinese capital city Beijing.

In the 26th and 27th matches, Aronian—who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the previous World Team Chess champions, Armenia, and who is ranked second in the FIDE ratings—lost to GMs Alexander Grischuk (Russia) and Anish Giri (Netherlands), respectively.

After the 27th match, Aronian is sixth, with 16.5 points. 

Three matches remain in the tournament. 

In the 28th match, the Armenian GM will face GM Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia).

In Beijing, Aronian is competing in the rapid, blitz, and Basque system chess tournaments. 

Levon Aronian’s opponents are GMs Karjakin, Grischuk, Mamedyarov, Dominguez, Ponomariov, Radjabov, Lê Quang Liêm, Wang Hao, Wang Yue, Nepomniachtchi, Vachier-Lagrave, Kamsky, Lékó, Ivanchuk, and Giri.
