Perspectives of Armenian Judo athletes in European Championships

Men’s team, including Hovhannes Davtyan (60 kg), Armen Nazaryan (66 kg), Artem Baghdasaryan (81 kg), and Hakob Arakelyan (100 kg) and women’s team including Gayane Harutyunyan (48 kg) and Zhanna Stankevich (57 kg) will represent Armenia at 2012 - JUDO European Championships in Russian Chelyabinsk on April 27-29.

“The European Championships are an asset on the psychological point of view, as successful performance at a tournament ahead to the Olympics will just give additional confidence to the athlete,” Armenian Judo team coach Harutyun Gevorgyan told NEWS.am Sport.

Asked whether it is possible that Hovhannes Davtyan and Armen Nazaryan, already qualified for the Olympics, occupy a place in the top eight in their categories if they win, the coach said that theoretically it is possible, while practically hardly.

Armenian Judo team is currently in Armavir, Russia, for trainings. Asked why the coach chose that place, he said that as the championships are to be held in Russia, it is better for the team to be adapted to a similar environment.

To note, the coach believes that all the Armenian athletes can win medals, though the focus is on Davtyan and Nazaryan. Anyway, the team goes for victory no matter the category.
