Candidates Tournament: Aronian vs. Caruana

Round 5 will be played Wednesday at the Candidates Tournament for the 2016 World Chess Championship, which is held in the Russian capital city of Moscow.

In this round, Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian, who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the former World Team Chess champions Armenia, will face Italian GM Fabiano Caruana (USA).

In the previous rounds, Aronian played draws with GM Anish Giri (Netherlands), former World Champion, GM Viswanathan Anand (India) and GM Peter Svidler (Russia), and defeated GM Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria).

After four rounds, Levon Aronian is second with 2.5 points, and half a point behind the current leader, GM Sergey Karjakin (Russia).

The winner of the Candidates Tournament, which has about a €420-thousand prize fund, will be the challenger for the 2016 World Chess Championship against the reining champion, GM Magnus Carlsen (Norway), from November 11 to 30, in New York.
