Ronaldo becomes oldest player to score in World Cup knockout stage

Portugal and Al-Nassr star forward Cristiano Ronaldo has become the oldest footballer to score in a FIFA World Cup knockout stage.

In the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot against Croatia at the age of 41 years and 148 days.

Ronaldo surpassed the respective age record set by former Portugal defender Pepe. In the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, Pepe had scored against Switzerland at the age of 39 years and 283 days.

Also, Ronaldo has become the oldest footballer to have played in a World Cup knockout stage.

Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1 and will face reigning European champions Spain in the Round of 16.
