Oldest manager in World Cup playoffs announced

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has become the oldest manager in a World Cup playoff, Squawka reports.

Broos participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 against Canada at the age of 74 years and 79 days.

He surpassed the respective age record set by Oscar Tabarez, who had managed Uruguay in the 2018 World Cup quarterfinals at the age of 71 years and 125 days.

South Africa lost 0-1 to Canada in the Round of 32 and were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.
