Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has become the oldest footballer in the history of the German national team to play in a major international tournament, the World Cup or the Euro.
At 40 years and 79 days, Neuer played in Germany’s first match of the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Curacao.
As a result, he surpassed the age record set by former Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaus, who played against Portugal at Euro 2000 at the age of 39 years and 91 days.
Germany defeated Curacao 7-1, and Neuer played his 125th match for his country.
In their second match in the 2026 World Cup group stage, Germany will face Ivory Coast on Saturday.
