European Wrestling Championships: Armenia’s Artur Aleksanyan starts with impressive win against Turkey opponent

On the second competition day of the 2024 European Wrestling Championships being held in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, the top star of the Armenian national team, Artur Aleksanyan (97 kg) was the first among the day’s five Greco-Roman wrestlers of Armenia to go to the mat.

The Olympic Games gold, silver and bronze medalist, four-time world champion, six-time European champion Aleksanyan, who has already qualified for the Paris Olympics this summer, competed with Beytullah Kayisdag (Turkish) in the opening—Round of 16—match, won convincingly ahead of time with a score of 9-1, and advanced to the quarterfinals.

The preliminary Greco-Roman wrestling matches of the 60, 67, 72, and 82kg categories also will take place Tuesday. Gevorg Gharibyan (60 kg), Slavik Galstyan (67 kg), Ashot Khachatryan (72 kg), and Karen Khachatryan (82 kg) will compete from Team Armenia.
