Coaches of Armenia national Greco-Roman wrestling team to apply to Court of Arbitration for Sport (PHOTO)

We are going to apply to the CAS: Court of Arbitration for Sport in regard to the matches of Karen Aslanyan, Karapet Chalyan and Artur Aleksanyan at Tokyo 2020. Our athletes need to see that they are supported by a country that is fighting for them. We will address the Armenian Wrestling Federation, the National Olympic Committee of Armenia and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia with this issue, Armenian News-NEWS.am Sport’s correspondent reports.

Coaches of the Armenia national Greco-Roman style wrestling team Eduard Sahakyan and Gevorg Aleksanyan toady summed up the 32nd Summer Olympic Games that ended in Tokyo. At the wrestling tournament, Armenia had 4 Greco-Roman style wrestlers and scored one silver medal. The team’s trainers have decided to apply to court through the Federation and athletic organizations to launch an investigation into the matches of the Armenian wrestlers at Tokyo 2020.

“Our four wrestlers performed very well and worked very literately, but referees intervened and didn’t let us fight until the end and receive the appreciation for the great work we had done in the previous five years. I’m content with the team’s participation, our boys showed their best sides in terms of quality, but there are times when we failed to defeat the referees. In this situation, it’s very hard to agree with and acknowledge the decisions of the jury at the Olympic Games,” he said.

According to Gevorg Aleksanyan, he hasn’t encountered such unfair refereeing at any Olympic Games.

“We can’t agree with the results. I specifically declare that we could have returned and were ready to return with three medals, and one of them would be a gold medal of Artur Aleksanyan. I don’t view Karen Aslanyan and Karapet Chalyan as defeated. Artur Aleksanyan also wasn’t defeated in the final. Others disturbed them,” Aleksanyan said.

The coaches of the Armenia national wrestling team have decided to apply to the CAS.

During the Greco-Roman style wrestling tournament at Tokyo 2020, out of Armenia’s representatives, Artur Aleksanyan (97 kg) won second place, and he added a silver medal to his Olympic gold and bronze medals.

Karapet Chalyan (77 kg), who was defeated during the match for the bronze medal, was also close to scoring a medal. Armen Melikyan (60 kg) and Karen Aslanyan (67 kg) were defeated in the quarter-final and were left out of the competition after beginning with victories.
