Tokyo 2020: 2 Olympians to represent Armenia on July 27

Two athletes will represent Armenia at the Olympic Games in Tokyo on July 27.

During the women’s weightlifting tournament, Armenia’s only representative Izabella Yaylyan will perform in Group A of the 59 kg weightlifters. The tournament will begin at 10:50am Armenia time.

During the men’s swimming tournament, Armenia’s only representative Artur Barseghyan will perform in the 100-meter freestyle. The tournaments will begin at 2:00-2:23pm Armenia time.

Izabella Yaylyan, weightlifter, 59 kg category

Izabella Yaylyan was born on January 4, 1995 in Yerevan. Her personal trainer is Hrant Tonoyan. She is a European vice-champion (2009 and 2010), European junior champion (2011-12), European bronze medalist (2013), U-20 European champion (2014-15) and bronze medalist of European U-23 championship in Albania (2017).

In 2018, she became adult champion of Armenia, and in 2019, she scored a small silver medal during the snatch drill of the European championship in Batumi, winning fifth place in the biathlon.

Artur Barseghyan, swimming, 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle

Artur Barseghyan was born on March 29, 2002 in Yerevan. His personal trainer is Armine Avetisyan.

He is a multiple junior, youth and adult champion of Armenia and a record-setter, winner of international tournaments. The first serious attempt in the adult group was during the play-off for the UAE World Cup in 2016 where he set a personal record.

In 2017, he participated in the European Olympic Festival in Hungary where he won sixth place.

In 2019, he won 7th place at the World Junior Championship in Budapest and was in rank B. He is also a champion of the 2019 Pan-Armenian Games, a champion, as well as silver and bronze medalist of the open championship in Bulgaria in 2021.

He scored a pass to Tokyo 2020 after being ranked B at a championship.

Barseghyan will also perform in the 50-meter freestyle after competing in the 100-meter freestyle on July 30 at 2:00-2:46pm Armenia time.
