Meltwater Champions Chess Tour: Armenia’s Aronian reaches playoffs

Levon Aronian (Armenia) placed eighth in the preliminary round of the Magnus Invitational of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour rapid chess competition and reached the playoffs.

In the quarterfinals to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aronian will face reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen (Norway), who took first place in the preliminary round.

The grandmasters will play eight games, each, in the quarterfinals.

The prize fund of this chess tournament is 220 thousand US dollars.

Levon Aronian is holding the first tournament after refusing to play under the Armenian flag. However, he has not yet represented the United States in this tournament and is playing under the Armenian flag.

As reported earlier, Levon Aronian is playing in his first tournament ever since his decision to no longer represent Armenia. The Armenian grandmaster, however, does not represent the US yet, and he still represents Armenia in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.
