World No. 18 Karen Khachanov (Russia) won his opening match in the Australian Open in Melbourne.
In the first round, the Muscovite Armenian tennis player defeated world No. 38 Alex Michelsen (USA) 4:6, 6:4, 6:3, 5:7, 6:3 in a match that lasted 3 hours and 57 minutes.
Khachanov's opponent in the second round will be the winner of the match between world No. 118 Christopher O'Connell (Australia) and world No. 242 Nishesh Basavareddy (USA) in the first round.
The Australian Open has a prize fund of $74.9 million.
