Italy female boxer who lost in controversial bout at Paris Olympics retires from the sport

Angela Carini (Italy), who lost to transgender Imane Khelif (Algeria) in the Women's 66kg boxing Round of 16 bout at the Paris Olympics, announced her retirement from the sport.

She had refused to continue the fight after receiving several strong blows to her face and head in the first 46 seconds of the aforementioned fight with Khelif.

"In a few seconds, I received such blows that I lost my balance, I could not breathe. I was asking myself ‘who is standing against me, but we are athletes, not judges.’ For me, this is not a loss. I consciously surrendered. I am leaving and saying goodbye to boxing," Carini said, La Stampa reports..

In the 2023 World Championships, Imane Khelif was disqualified due to not passing the gender test and having high level of testosterone.

Imane Khelif will fight Anna Luca Hamori (Hungary) in the quarterfinals of the Women's 66kg competition at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.
