Paris Olympics controversial opening ceremony scene central character gets death threats

DJ, artist and activist Barbara Butch, the central character of the controversial scene—a parody of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper"—at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, has received thousands of insulting messages, as well as threats of murder, rape, and torture from French and foreigners on social media. Butch's lawyer, Audrey Msellati, posted about it on social media.

"After the opening ceremony of the Paris Games, Barbara Butch was the target of an unprecedented campaign of cyberbullying and slander. She presents a protest against those actions, which were carried out by French citizens, as well as foreigners. She intends to prosecute anyone who tries to intimidate her," the lawyer's statement reads.

The bishops of France also had expressed regret over the aforesaid scene at the opening ceremony of the Paris Games.

The closing ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games will be held on August 11.
