The son of Liberian President George Weah scored the first goal for the United States at the 2022 World Cup. In the first round of the group stage, the U.S. national team competed against Wales and won by a narrow margin thanks to a goal in the 36th minute by 22-year-old French Lille forward Timothy Weah (video). The goal was assisted by 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder Christian Pulisic of London.

George Weah, 56, is a former Liberian national team player, Milan, Chelsea, Monaco, PSG, Manchester City and Al Jaziraand was elected president of Liberia in 2018. Timothy Weah was born in New York City and played for the U.S. junior and youth national teams.
