CHAMPION’S DAY: Artur Davtyan

NEWS.am Sport presents Artur Davtyan, the only representative of Armenia in the gymnastics competition at the 32nd Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo, Japan, from July 23 to August 8.

Davtyan was declared the champion in the Pommel Horse and stood—with a forget-me-not, representing the Armenian Genocide anniversary—at the highest level of the platform of honor on April 24, 2021, the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, at the European Gymnastics Championships held in Basel, Switzerland.

He is one of Armenia’s real medal contenders at Tokyo 2020.

He was born on August 8, 1992 in Yerevan.

Davtyan is the 2010 European junior champion, the 2012 world gymnastics cup silver medalist, the 2013 European championship bronze medalist, the 2013 world gymnastics cup bronze medalist, the 2016 European silver medalist, the 2019 European Games champion, and the 2021 European champion.

He competed in the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics.

He qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the world gymnastics championship held on October 8, 2019 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Artur Davtyan will be the first member of the Armenian Olympic team to compete at Tokyo 2020, as the men's gymnastic qualifying round will take place on Saturday.

Davtyan is already in the Olympic capital and has held his first trainings.

The champion of Europe and the European Games will compete in his main event—the  Vault—as well as in the Pommel Horse.
