In the 52nd minute, Real Madrid's Spanish defender Dean Huijsen was sent off for a professional foul (denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity). The resulting penalty was successfully converted by the hosts' Spanish defender, Alejandro Grimaldo. In the 59th minute, Canadian forward Jonathan David doubled the lead for the team managed by Argentine coach Diego Simeone.
Former German national team defender Antonio Rudiger scored in the 89th minute.
Atletico moved up to second place with 16 points. The team managed by Portuguese coach José Mourinho suffered its second defeat of the season and sits in third place with 15 points.
