Victor Wembanyama, the 22-year-old center for the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, has been named captain of the French national team for the 2027 World Cup qualifying matches.
"It is a great honor for me. I know I am the youngest on the team, but I will strive to lead the entire squad forward by setting an example. I know that a lot of points and defensive reliability are expected of me, but I also intend to do everything possible to lead the team. It is a great joy and honor for me to take on this responsibility. Thank you," said Wembanyama, as quoted by Wemby Alien Era.
Wembanyama became the French national team's youngest captain since Tony Parker was appointed to the role in 2003.
