23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams lost in the first round of the women’s singles competition at Wimbledon.
The 44-year-old American, who has resumed her professional tennis career, competed with world No. 87 20-year-old Maya Joint (Australia) and lost 3:6, 7:6 (8:6), 3:6. The match lasted 2 hours and 21 minutes.
The two daughters of Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian were also watching the match from the stands.
Maya Joint's opponent in the second round will be world No. 32 Alexandra Eala (Philippines).
The Wimbledon prize fund is 64.2 million pounds sterling.
