Reigning German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were hosted by last season’s Spanish La Liga runners-up Real Madrid and won 2-1 in the first legs of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
Bayern’s Colombian striker Luis Diaz opened the scoring in the 41st minute, England striker Harry Kane doubled the visitors’ lead in the 46th minute, but Real’s French striker Kylian Mbappe reduced the goal deficit in the 74th minute.
Bayern’s 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was named man of the match, making nine saves.
In the other match of the day, Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon hosted last season’s English Premier League runners-up Arsenal and lost 0-1.
German striker Kai Havertz netted the only goal in the first minute of added time.
This game’s man of the match award went to Arsenal’s Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, who made 5 saves.
The second legs of these pairing will be played on April 15.
