Elina Avanesyan, the 58th ranked women’s tennis player in the world, has confirmed in a post on social media that she has changed her citizenship and will represent Armenia.
The 21-year-old athlete represented Russia.
"Honored to announce that I have received my Armenian citizenship and will proudly represent Armenia starting at the Cincinnati Open on Monday! This journey has been incredible, and I am excited to bring my best to the court and play for my ancestral homeland. Thank you to everyone for your unwavering support!," wrote Avanesyan.
The Russian Armenian athlete was born in Pyatigorsk, Russia, but now lives in Barcelona, Spain.
