UEFA suspends Turkey's Merih Demiral for Turkish far-right nationalist Gray Wolves’ gesture

UEFA has officially announced the suspension of Turkish national team defender Merih Demiral for two matches of the Euro 2024.

The reason is that Demiral had made the salute gesture of the Turkish far-right extremist nationalist organization Gray Wolves towards the Turkish fans in the stadium after his goal in Turkey’s 2-1 win against Austria in the Round of 16 of the Euro 2024.

According to the rules of UEFA, any display of political messages during the matches is prohibited.

The aforesaid gesture is banned in France and Austria because it resembles the German Nazi salute. But this sign of the Gray Wolves is not prohibited by law in Germany, which is hosting the Euro 2024.
