Euro 2024: Georgia record surprise win against Portugal, are in playoffs

Georgia have recorded a surprise 2-0 win against Portugal in the third—and last—matches in Group F in the UEFA Euro 2024 group stage, took third place, with 4 points, in this group, and advanced to the Round of 16 of the European football championships for the first time in their history.

Napoli forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the score in the second minute. And Metz striker George Mikautadze converted a penalty for Georgia in the 57th minute.

In the other match of Group F, Turkey beat the Czech Republic 2-1 and finished second, with 6 points, in this Group.

In the first half, the Czechs were down to 10 men. In the 20th minute, Fiorentina midfielder Antonin Barak received a second yellow card and was sent off for stepping on an opponent's foot.

Turkey and Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu opened the scoring in the 51st minute. In the 66th minute, the Czech Republic equalized thanks to the goal of West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek. But Besiktas forward Cenk Tosun netted Turkey's winning goal in the fourth minute of added time.

Turkey continue their campaign in the playoffs. After two earlier wins, Portugal already had secured a spot in the Round of 16 in the previous round. The Czech Republic finished last, with just 1 point, in Group F and are out.
