The 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams could not reach the third round of the tournament in Toronto. The former world number one lost to Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 2-6, 4-6. The match lasted one hour and 18 minutes. 

The prize fund of the tournament in Toronto is $2.5 million. 

Serena Williams took part in her last tournament in Toronto. She did not hold back tears as she said goodbye to her fans.

The 40-year-old American said she would end her career after the US Open. The US Open will be held from August 28 to September 11.
