Chess news on Armenian players

YEREVAN. – Organizers of the traditional Tata Steel Festival of chess, which will be held in January 2015 in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, have announced the participants’ list of Tournament B, the Tata Steel Challengers, Armchess reported.

Armenian Grandmaster (GM) Samuel Sevian, who will turn 14 on December 26, is also invited to this prestigious tournament. GMs Navara, Wei Yi, Shankland, L’Ami, Potkin, Van Kampen, and Timman will be Sevian’s opponents in this event.

The composition of the main tournament, the Tata Steel Masters, had become known earlier. Here, Armenian GM Levon Aronian’s opponents will be World Champion Carlsen, and GMs Caruana, Giri, So, Vachier-Lagrave, Ding Liren, Radjabov, Ivanchuk, Jobava, Saric, Hou Yifan, and Van Wely.

Separately, GMs Sergei Movsesian and Vladimir Akopian have tallied 6 points, each, out of 9 points, at the open that was held in Doha, Qatar. GMs Hrant Melkumyan and Hovhannes Gabuzyan amassed 5.5 points, apiece, Gabriel Sargissian tallied 5 points, and Robert Hovhannisyan and Elina Danielian garnered 4.5 points, each.

The winner of this tournament was GM Yu Yangyi (China), with 7.5 points.

GM Zaven Andriasian, on the other hand, has scored 4 points after five rounds at the open that is held in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. International Master (IM) Vahe Baghdasaryan has tallied 3 points so far.

The current leader of this competition is GM is Sergey Volkov (Russia), with 5 points.
