Armenia win no medals

The final ninth-round games are played Thursday at the men’s World Chess Team Championship 2013 being held in Antalya, Turkey.

In Round 9, the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the former World Team Chess champions Armenia—comprising Grandmasters Levon Aronian, Sergei Movsesian, Vladimir Akopian, Gabriel Sargissian, and Tigran Petrosian—are facing Ukraine.

Ukraine are ahead by a score of 2-1, and therefore—and regardless of the outcome of their last remaining match—, Armenia have lost the chance of winning a medal in the tournament.

Going into the final round Armenia had tallied 10 points, Ukraine had garnered 12 points, and Russia were the leaders with 13 points. As a result, Armenia needed solely a win against Ukraine to receive a medal.

But Ukraine have won the bronze medal.
