FIDE 2024 Candidates Tournament contenders’ final makeup announced

The 16th world chess champion, world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen (Norway) has informed the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in an official letter that he will not participate in the 2024 Candidates Tournament to be held to determine the challenger for the 2024 World Chess Championship match.

As a result, Carlsen was replaced by Nijat Abasov (Azerbaijan), who had placed fourth in the 2023 FIDE World Cup.
Carlsen had qualified for the 2024 Candidates Tournament by winning the 2023 FIDE World Cup.

Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia), Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, and Dommaraju Gukesh (India), Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura (USA), as well as Alireza Firouzja (France) will also participate in the 2024

Candidates Tournament which will be held in April in Toronto, Canada.
