Автором первого гола чемпионата мира по футболу мог бы стать нападающий сборной Эквадора и турецкого «Фенербахче» Эннер Валенсия (видео), но взятие ворот был отменен с помощью системы VAR. Валенсия отличился уже на третьей минуте.

В матче открытия Эквадор встретился с командой Катара.
