London Olympics 2012: Hugo Chavez declares Olympic champion a national hero

President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez declared London Olympics champion, fencer Ruben Limardo a national hero.

In the final Limardo defeated Norway’s Bartosz Piasecki 15-10. Chavez congratulated Ruben calling him “the son of nation”.

He will be granted a sword of one of the greatest fencers Simon Bolivar. President Chavez said Venezuela greet the champion as a national hero. In response Limardo thanked the President saying his trophy belongs to all Venezuelans, BBC reports.

It is first Venezuela’s gold medal since 1968.
