Messi becomes world's highest-paid footballer

Argentine professional footballer Lionel Messi inked a new contract with FC Barcelona and became the highest-paid player in the world, El Mundo reported.

Messi will receive 42 million euros per year. Argentine footballer has ended speculation about his future by signing a new contract with Barcelona until 2021. The buyout clause was set at €700m.

Messi's former contract was set to finish in 2018. He made his debut 4,788 days ago, played 602 games, scored 523 goals and won 30 trophies.

Earlier, the highest-paid player was Shanghai Shenhua's Argentine striker Carlos Tevez (38 million euros per year).
