World Chess Cup finals: Armenia’s Aronian wins first tiebreaker

16:00   27 September, 2017

Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian (Armenia) defeated GM Ding Liren (China) in Wednesday’s first tiebreaker at the finals of 2017 FIDE World Chess Cup, which is wrapping up in Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi.

In the first rapid chess match of these tiebreakers, Aronian—who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the former World Team Chess champions, Armenia—was declared the winner in the 30th move.

If the two GMs draw level after the tiebreakers, an Armageddon tiebreaker will be played. And if this match also ends in a draw, the win will be awarded to the chess master playing with the black pieces.

By advancing to the finals of the 2017 FIDE World Chess Cup, the two GMs already have been eligible to compete in the Candidates Tournament, which will be held in the German capital city of Berlin in March 2018, to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship.

Levon Aronian is the 2005 FIDE World Chess Cup winner.
