World Chess Cup: Armenia’s Aronian wins second tiebreaker
17:03 21 September, 2017Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian (Armenia) defeated GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France) in the second tiebreaker Thursday at the semifinals of the 2017 FIDE World Chess Cup being held in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia.
Aronian, who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the former World Team Chess champions Armenia, beat his opponent in the 26th move and equalized the score at 1-1.
Two more tiebreakers will be played now, for a short time.
Aside from advancing to the final of the 2017 FIDE World Chess Cup, the finalists will also be eligible to compete in the Candidates Tournament, which will be held in the German capital city of Berlin in March 2018, to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship.
