10:54   28 June, 2017

The UK authorities attempted to intervene in the selection of the 2018 World Cup football host country, according to a report posted on the official FIFA website.

Accordingly, before the respective voting, Prince William and former Prime Minister David Cameron had met with FIFA ex-Vice President Chung Mong-joon, who represents South Korea.

UK was vying for the 2018 World Cup, whereas South Korea—the 2022 World Cup.

Before the respective voting in Zurich, Switzerland, Cameron had tried to convince Chung to vote for the UK. In return, Geoff Thompson, the UK representative at FIFA, was to vote for South Korea.

In October 2015, however, Chung Mong-joon was removed from FIFA after the corruption scandal, and banned from all football activities for six years.
