Rio 2016: 31st Olympic Games are open (PHOTO)
06:27 6 August, 2016The opening ceremony of Rio Olympics took place at legendary Maracana stadium.
The guests were welcomed by the president of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach.
The fire of the Games was lit by the most famous Brazilian tennis player, winner of Roland Garros Gustavo Kuerten, who was chosen for the honorary mission because legendary footballer Pele refused due to health problems.
The anthem of Brazil was followed by parade of nations featuring 207 delegations The flag bearer of the Armenian team is swimmer Vahan Mkhitaryan.
The first Olympic Games held in South America will last till August 21. Armenia will be represented by 33 athletes. They will compete in wrestling, boxing, judo, weightlifting, gymnastics, swimming, athletics and shooting.
The gold of Greco-Roman wrestler Armen Nazaryan at the Olympic Games 1996 in Atlanta, has been the only gold medal in the history of independent Armenia.
