Candidates Tournament: Aronian defeated by Svidler

In Round 11 of the Candidates Tournament for the 2016 World Chess Championship, which is held in the Russian capital city of Moscow, Armenian Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian played with white pieces against GM Peter Svidler (Russia). Aronian was defeated on the 48th move, although he had an advantage during the match and could at least ensure a draw.

Aronian remained on the 4th place with 5.5 points.

Svidler equaled with Aronian with 5.5 points. GM Anish Giri (Netherlands), who shared a point with Hikaru Nakamura (USA), has the same number of points.

GM Fabiano Caruana (USA) played a draw against GM Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) and is the current leader with 6.5 points.

The match of leaders GM Viswanathan Anand (India) and GM Sergey Karjakin (Russia) is underway.

In the next round, Aronian will face Caruana with black pieces.

Three rounds are left before the end of the tournament.

The winner of the Candidates Tournament, which has about a €420-thousand prize fund, will be the challenger for the 2016 World Chess Championship against the reining champion, GM Magnus Carlsen (Norway), from November 11 to 30, in New York.
