Greco-Roman wrestler Roman Amoyan, who was the first of Armenia’s athletes to compete in the 1st European Games that kicked off in the Azerbaijan capital city of Baku, was defeated in a match for the bronze medal.

He lost 1-4 to Azerbaijan's Elmar Mukhtarov.

As reported earlier, in the 59 kg category competitions on Saturday, Amoyan started his campaign in the 1/8 finals, where he defeated Portugal’s representative by a score of 6-0. In the quarterfinals, however, Armenia’s representative lost to Stepan Maryanyan (Russia).

But since Maryanyan defeated Mukhtarov in the semifinals and advanced to the final, Amoyan got a chance to vie for the bronze medal.

In his first and only consolation match, Armenia’s athlete defeated Denmark’s representative by a score of 3-0, and therefore he will compete for the bronze medal.

In the bronze-medal match to be fought on Saturday evening, Roman Amoyan, 31, will enter the wrestling mat against Azerbaijan’s Elman Mukhtarov, 20.
