2014 World Cup: Fan fakes being disabled to enter pitch

15:55   3 July, 2014

An unusual incident occurred during the 2014 FIFA World Cup 1/8-final match in Brazil between the national football squads of Belgium and USA.

An Italian fan named Mario Ferri pretended to be physically challenged and sat at the stadium area allocated for the physically disabled.

Subsequently, the supporter got out of the wheelchair and took to the field with a shirt containing the hashtag “Save Favelas Children”—favelas are the Brazilian term for urban, often impoverished neighborhoods and communities—and the hashtag “Ciro Vive [Ciro Lives],” in memory of the A.S. Roma (Italy) fan who had died ahead of the Coppa Italia match between S.S.C. Napoli and ACF Fiorentina.
