Candidates Tournament 2014: Armenia’s Aronian trails current leaders by half point

Round 2 in the Candidates Tournament 2014, which is held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, wrapped up on Friday.

Only one of the four games ended in a draw.

As reported earlier, Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian—who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the previous World Team Chess champions, Armenia, and who is second in the World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings—defeated GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan).

After two rounds, Aronian trails the current leaders by solely half a point.

In Saturday’s Round 3, the Armenian GM will face GM Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria).

The GM who wins this tournament will become the official World Chess Champion candidate, and compete against reining World Chess Champion, GM Magnus Carlsen (Norway) who tops the FIDE rankings, for the title of World Chess Champion.
