11:25 7 October, 2026Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi spoke after his farewell match for the Argentina national team. In a friendly game held in Buenos Aires, the Argentines faced the Benin team and won 3–0.
"The emotions are incredible. Thank you, everyone. The first person I’m thinking of right now is my father.
I would love to stay here with Argentina forever, for the rest of my life. But the time has come to leave. After the World Cup, it is time to say goodbye. Thank you, because representing Argentina is the greatest thing there is. I gave it my all. I never gave up when wearing this jersey," Marca quotes Messi as saying.
Messi made his debut for the Argentina national team in August 2005, playing 207 matches across all competitions and recording 125 goals and 67 assists.
