The 40-year-old forward for the German club Schalke Edin Dzeko announced his retirement from the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

"Nothing in my career could compare to the pride I felt every time I wore the national team jersey. It was my childhood dream a dream I carried with me through each of the 151 matches where I had the honor of representing my country on the football pitch. Every single time, I felt as proud as if it were the first. If I played for the national team until the age of 40, it is because I truly gave myself to it completely.

Playing for my country is the most emotional opportunity football has given me. Seeing my compatriots celebrating in the streets of our cities is another incredible gift football has bestowed upon me. And that is exactly how I want to spend my final evening representing my country: alongside all of you, wearing the jersey I have loved since childhood and will always love," Dzeko wrote on social media.

Dzeko will make his final appearance for the national team on October 2 in a Nations League match against Sweden.
