World Sambo Cup: Armenia representatives win 9 medals on first day

Team Armenia  and the representatives of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) won 9 medals (3 silver and 6 bronze) on the first day of competition Thursday in the World Sambo Cup 2024 being held in Armenia’s capital Yerevan.
Artur Manukyan (64 kg), Karlen Mahinyan (71 kg), and Davit Hovsepyan (58 kg) from Artsakh, who is competing under the banner of refugees, became silver medalists.

Bronze medal winners were: Karen Sargsyan (58 kg), Artur Hakobyan (79 kg), Grigor Beknazaryan (98 kg), Irena Petrosyan (54 kg), Arpine Mnatsakanyan (54 kg), and Srbuhi Hovakimyan (59 kg).

And after the final match of the first day of competition, the medal ceremonies were held.

But during the 71kg medal ceremony, the Ukrainian athlete who won a bronze medal refused to take a general photo. When all the medal winners stood on the podium, the aforesaid Ukrainian sambo wrestler did not approach the other medal winners and did not stand next to the Russian athlete who had won the gold medal.

Russia’s representatives are compete in the World Sambo Cup under the banner of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS)

Armenia’s Karlen Mahinyan became the silver medalist in this weight class.

The World Sambo Cup 2024 will conclude Friday.
