Edgar Sevikyan, the 22-year-old midfielder of Pari Nizhny Novgorod football club of Russia, told how he ended up in the Armenian national team, turning down the invitation by the Russian national squad.

"Two weeks before receiving the invitation from the Russian national team in September, they called me from Armenia and said that they could prepare the documents. I answered: ‘It's great! Super! I'm ready!

After some time, the [Pari Nizhny Novgorod] club called me and congratulated me on receiving an invitation from the Russian national team. I was very surprised; it was unexpected. I told the club that they are already preparing documents [for me] to play in the Armenian national team.

I have not had any conversation with [Russian national team manager Valery] Karpin, the Russian Football Union. I expressed myself publicly," Sevikyan said, Sport-express.ru reported.

Edgar Sevikyan made his debut in the Armenian national squad on October 12, in the match against Latvia in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers. Armenia had lost 0-2.
