Rafael Nadal, ranked second in the world, suffered an unexpected defeat in the second round of the Masters tournament held in Paris. The Spanish tennis player competed against the 31st player in the world, American Tommy Paul, who won 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

After the loss in Paris, Nadal wrote on social media that he would next play in the French capital in May while competing at Roland Garros.

For the first time in his career, Nadal cannot break the 1/16-final barrier in two consecutive Masters tournaments. Last August, Nadal lost to Croatia's Borna Ćorić in Cincinnati, S.C.
