Champions League: Lewandowski overtakes Benzema in list of top scorers

Rookie vice-champion Barcelona of Spain, Polish striker Robert Lewandowski rose to third on the list of top scorers in Champions League history, ahead of Real Madrid's French striker Karim Benzema.

Lewandowski scored a hat-trick against Czech club Viktoria Plzen in round one of the group stage and brought his tally of Champions League goals to 89. Benzema scored 86 goals.

The list is topped by English Manchester United's Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo (140) and French champion PSG's Argentine forward Lionel Messi (125).

Manchester United will play in the Europa League this season.
