World No. 1 and reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen (Norway) suffered a sensational defeat in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup, the last stage of the Grand Chess Tour, being held in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA.

Carlsen competed with Hans Niemann (USA), who has the lowest rating among the participants of this tournament, and accepted defeat in 57th move.

Niemann tops the current Sinquefield Cup standings, with 2.5 points. Levon Aronian, the former leader of the Armenian men’s national chess team who now represents the USA, also was defeated in the third round. His opponent in this round was Alireza Firouzja (France).

Nine rounds are held at Sinquefield Cup.
