Reigning champions Real Madrid were hosted by Espanyol in the third round of the Spanish La Liga, and they beat their hosts 3-1.

Real have now equaled Betis, with 9 points apiece, and top the current La Liga standings. Espanyol are sixteenth, with just 1 point.
