World's oldest chess grandmaster dies aged 100

It is with the deepest regret and sadness that we announce that the oldest grandmaster of the world, an outstanding theoretician, writer and journalist Yuri Averbakh (1922-2022) died on the 7th of May at the age of 100. The Chess Federation of Russia informed this on its website.   

Averbakh had celebrated his 100th birthday on February 8.

He was the president of the USSR Chess Federation, became the USSR chess champion in 1954, and twice won the title of European team chess champion—with the USSR team.
