FIDE Online Chess Olympiad: Armenia fails to make it to play-off

The Armenia national chess team failed to make it to the quarter-final of the FIDE Online Chess Olympiad.

On the third day of Sub-group A of the greatest division of the Olympiad, which is being held online for the second consecutive year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Armenia defeated Mongolia 4.5-1.5, was defeated by Indonesia 1-5, and won the China team 4-2.

In the six rounds of the first day, the Armenia team defeated Georgia (3.5-2.5) and Romania (4.5-1.5), tied the matches with Greece (3-3) and Australia (3-3), and was defeated by Kazakhstan (2.5-3.5) and Iran (2-4).

Armenia won 5th place in the sub-group with 10 (total: 28) points.

Out of the teams of Sub-group A, Kazakhstan — 16 points (34) and China — 14 (38.5) won the first two places and made it to the play-off.

Among the members of the Armenia team are Gabriel Sargsyan, Hayk Martirosyan, Aram Hakobyan, Elina Danielyan, Lilit Mkrtchyan and Anna Sargsyan. In the reserve are Robert Hovhannisyan, Hovhannes Gabuzyan, Susanna Gaboyan, Siranush Ghukasyan, Mamikon Gharibyan and Mariam Mkrtchyan.
